Caltex Announces Bio E-Flex Fuel Ahead Of Holden VE Series II Commodore Launch

Caltex Australia has today announced the upcoming launch of its Bio E-Flex fuel, an 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol blend (also known as E85), the result of a partnership with Holden and the Victorian Government.

Caltex Australia has today announced the upcoming launch of its Bio E-Flex fuel, an 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol blend (also known as E85), the result of a partnership with Holden and the Victorian Government.

Rolling out across Melbourne Caltex stations in September, followed Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra in October, Caltex's Bio E-Flex will be the recommended fuel for an E85-capable version of the VE Series II Commodore.

"Biofuels such as ethanol are fuels of the future as they are produced from renewable sources and can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Caltex Australia Manager for Government Affairs & Media, Frank Topham said.

"This move by Caltex is an important step in the development of a first generation biofuels market in Australia and will help pave the way for sustainable, lower cost second generation biofuels in the future."

Mr Topham stressed that the Bio E-Flex fuel is suitable only for 'flex-fuel' vehicles, such as the E85-capable models in the upcoming VE Series II Commodore range.

Flex-fuel cars are vehicles with an internal combustion engine capable of running on more than one fuel blend, the fuel injection and spark timing systems automatically adjusting to suit the actual blend - usually a mixture of petrol and ethanol or methanol fuel - detected by sensors in the fuel tank and engine.

The launch of the Bio E-Flex fuel comes as part of the Victorian Government's goal of cutting carbon emissions by 20 percent in 2020.

“Our Government is rising to the challenge of climate change, supporting new initiatives like biofuels to cut emissions and create a climate of new economic opportunity,” Industry and Trade Minister Jacinta Allan said.

“As part of the joint initiative, Holden is set to introduce flex-fuel vehicles across its product lines, including its top-selling Holden Commodore. These vehicles will be optimised to run on this high-ethanol fuel, which will be available at 11 Caltex sites in Victoria by end of October this year."

In Victoria, Bio E-Flex will initially be available from sites at Footscray, Hillside, Campbellfield, Mount Waverley, Clayton, Melton, Yarra Glen, Preston, Lilydale, Mornington and Springvale.
