The Bugatti 16C Galibier concept: its future as a production model has so far been shrouded in mystery, but reports out of the US this week have breathed new life into the ultra-luxurious supersaloon.

According to American magazine Autoweek, the Galibier will enter production in 2013 - around the same time, the report claims, that the beastly Bugatti Veyron will be put out to pasture.

Like the Veyron, of which around 260 have been built so far, the Galibier will reportedly be limited to just 300 examples and will set buyers back a cool US$1.5 million.

The Galibier 16C made its debut at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show, but rather than appearing on the brand's show stand, the special super-saloon was given a private showing for select VIPs only.

Power is drawn from a 596kW front-mounted version of the Veyron's 8.0 litre W16 engine, with a pair of superchargers replacing the four turbos of the Veyron engine.

The Veyron's seven-speed DSG transmission has also reportedly been swapped out for an eight-speed automatic.

As for the Galibier's future, a trademark application leaked from the World Intellectual Property Organisation last year suggests parent company Volkswagen is considering bringing the tough sedan to market.
