BMW has recently announced a hydrogen technology development that offers greater efficiency than diesel, claiming a 42 percent increase in thermal efficiency ? one percent greater than diesel, and 1.5 times more efficient than a regular petrol engine.
The technology uses a high-pressure direct-injection system and also utilises the type of combustion chamber geometry used in diesel engines.
BMW says the solution was in high-pressure fuel delivery, with the direct-injection system pumping hydrogen into the diesel-inspired combustion chamber at some 4500psi.
Claimed output figures are as high as 100kW (134hp) per litre of displacement.
The system was developed in cooperation with the Austrian Ministry for Transport, as well as the Graz University of Technology, HyCentA Research and HOERBIGER ValveTec.
