If the team at Car Magazine are right, BMW will deliver an M-division-prepped 1 Series Coupe - to be dubbed the 1 Series Coupe Super Sport - sometime in 2012.

You might be wondering why it wouldn't simply be called 'M1', but BMW already has a M1 in its stable (albeit retired) and that's the iconic mid-engine coupe of the late 1970s (shown after the jump).  BMW would likely wish to avoid confusion and unfavourable references, so 1 Series Coupe Super Sport it is.

The Super Sport would sit atop the 1 Series range - above the excellent 135i - and is rumoured to feature a high-revving 2.0 or 2.2 litre twin-turbo four-cylinder engine.

Output would be around the 225kW (300hp) mark, which puts it on par with the 135i. If that's correct, we'd expect the range topper to feature better suspension, superior braking, and be lighter than its sibling.

The render at the top of the page shows the hotted-up 1 Series sporting a pair of round headlights to pay tribute to its spiritual successor, the 2002 series tii model coupe.

A rear-wheel-drive layout and six-speed manual or dual-clutch semi-automatic transmission also appear on the unconfirmed feature list - or should we say wish list?

With BMW's 135i (pictured above) already winning hearts and minds around the world, a well-priced and higher-performing M-spec iteration would be sure to spike the interest of BMW fans.

Stay tuned for more information as it comes to light. We'll be watching this story closely.
