BMW has spilled the green beans this week with the announcement that it will launch a hybrid supercar in 2013, based on the Vision EfficientDynamics concept unveiled in Frankfurt last year.

The announcement follows reports last week that suggested the concept was well on its way to a production future.

Teased in recent months through its 'Don't Blog About This' campaign, the production version of the cutting-edge supercar looks set to maintain the complex styling of its concept forebear.

While a 3-4 second 0-100km/h sprint is expected of most supercars (with many now in the sub-3 second range), BMW's new hi-po hybrid will offer acceleration numbers more in-line with the outgoing M6 Coupe, reaching 100km/h in around 4.5 seconds.

To its credit, the hybrid-powered 'supercar' will emit only 30 percent of the M6 Coupe's CO2 emissions. Those green credentials won't come cheap however, with BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer confirming the new model will be priced just under the company's Rolls Royce models.

In Australia, that could put the price of the as-yet-unnamed car at around half-a-million dollars, or - if Reithofer was referring to the range-topping Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead - up to $1.3 million.

It won't be a limited run either: “I expect a very considerable share of conquests,” Reithofer told Bloomberg this week. “We want to achieve a certain market presence with the car and so can't limit production to one car a day.”

Munich remains mum on the finer details, although reports of Europe suggest the sleek Bimmer will be powered by a similar arrangement to the concept, including a 1.5 litre three-cylinder turbo-diesel engine match to front- and rear- axel-mounted electric motors. In total, the prototype produces 265kW and a massive 800Nm of torque.

BMW's hybrid supercar will face off against Porsche's 918 Spyder hybrid supercar, along with all-electric foes in the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell and the Audi e-tron.
