Following in the tyre tracks of its Vision Efficient Dynamics hybrid concept, BMW has announced it will unveil an electrifying new concept in Geneva next month.

Dubbed 'Vision ConnectedDrive', the futuristic roadster borrows more than a few styling cues and technologies from its hardtop predecessor - features that BMW says are destined for future production models.

Unlike the diesel-electric hybrid Vision EfficienctDynamics, the ConnectedDrive is driven by an all-electric powertrain - although BMW has yet to reveal any of its technical details.

In the case of the Vision EfficientDynamics, power is provided by a diesel-electric hybrid system, featuring a conventional 1.5 litre 3-cylinder turbo-diesel mated to a pair of electric motors.

The combination achieves a total output of 265kW and a startling 800Nm of torque.

The mid-mounted diesel engine, developing 122kW and 290Nm of torque, is joined by electric motors positioned at the front and rear axles, improving weight distribution and effectively making the Vision concept all-wheel-drive.

The rear electric motor, positioned between the diesel engine and the double-clutch transmission, produces 25kW and 291Nm of torque, but can deliver short bursts of power up to 38kW.

How much of this technology has made its way into the ConnectedDrive remains to be seen, but with only a few weeks until the Geneva show opens, we'll know soon enough.
