Just days after the debut of its new range-topping and petrol-powered 1 Series M Coupe, BMW's all-electric ActiveE - based on the same 1 Series platform - has been spied testing in Europe.

The first images of the upcoming ActiveE 1 Series since its debut in concept form at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, these new spy shots reveal that development of BMW's electric powertrain is well under way.

Once this phase of factory testing is complete, the ActiveE will be used as everyday vehicles by select private and fleet customers in Europe and the US, the results used to further develop BMW's future EV line-up, dubbed Megacity.

The ActiveE features a new synchronous electric motor located in the rear axle, producing 125kW and 250Nm of torque, propelling the Coupe to 100km/h in 9 seconds and a maximum speed of 145km/h.
