Following the unveiling in December of the upcoming BMW 6 Series Convertible, reports out of Europe this week suggest its hardtop sibling will make its debut at April's Shanghai Motor Show.

BMW is wasting no time getting the big coupe ready for its unveiling, with spy photos obtained this week revealing a lightly camouflaged test car and its panoramic sun roof.

The upcoming 6 Series Coupe was confirmed in September last year, when BMW revealed a 6 Series Coupe concept inspired by the earlier Gran Coupe concept.

According to Auto Week magazine, the 2012 6 Series Coupe will be offered in 640i and 650i variants, with other lower-spec models debuting in the future.

The 650i will likely be powered by the same 4.4 litre turbocharged V8 engine driving the Convertible, providing 400kW and 610Nm of torque.

For the convertible, the 0-100km/h sprint is covered in 4.9 seconds, shaving a few hundredths off the 5.2 seconds of the outgoing model.

Whether a new M6 will join the family remains to be seen, but Auto Week claims we will also see a sedan version of the 6 Series, offering the same coupe-like roofline but with the benefit of rear doors.
