While the BMW 1 Series is destined to morph from a RWD hatch into a FWD sedan/hatch family in the not-too-distant future, it seems fans of compact RWD BMWs may not be limited to the two-door 2 Series coupe and convertible range after all.

A report in UK mag Autocar says BMW is brewing up a four-door version of the 2 Series, which will wear a “Gran Coupe” suffix and offer a more dynamic small sedan alternative to the less performance-focused FWD 1 Series.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe will also allow BMW to participate in the luxury small sedan space, a segment it has ignored while Audi and Mercedes-Benz have enjoyed success with their respective A3 sedan and CLA models.

A red-hot M2 Gran Coupe variant is also supposedly part of the product plan, however Autocar’s un-named sources say a specific bodystyle for the 2 Series Gran Coupe has yet to be decided with planners tossing up between a conventional four-door sedan layout and a five-door liftback configuration.

Dimensionally, the 2 Series Gran Coupe will feature a wheelbase that measures somewhere between the 2 Series coupe’s 2690mm and the 3 Series sedan’s 2810mm.

Expect an engine lineup that mirrors that of the 2 Series coupe/convertible range, plus a new range of 3-cylinder entry-level powertrains. A plug-in hybrid may also eventuate.

If Autocar’s intel is on the money, expect the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe to make a showroom debut sometime in 2019, approximately one year before the two-door models it’s based upon will be replaced by a next-generation model.
