It looks as though we are not the only ones to have taken a shine to the BMW 1 Series Coupe, with the news that BMW's little two-door has just taken out top honours in the 2008 Golden Steering Wheel Awards.
Dr. Norbert Reithofer, the Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, was on hand to receive the Award which is sponsored by Europe’s largest Sunday newspaper 'Bild am Sonntag', in Berlin.
A readers’ poll determines the winners with BMW’s popular coupe receiving no less than 26.4 percent of the total vote. More than 220,000 votes were cast so there is clearly much-love for the baby-beamer.
The adoration appears to be infectious, with Australian buyers having snapped up over 500 1 Series Coupés since they first went on sale in May of this year. Together with the new 1 Series Convertible, BMW last month secured an impressive 27.8 percent share of the sports car market below $80,000.
The accolades do not stop there either, with a BMW TV commercial also winning first prize at the awards ceremony. The commercial in question humorously showcases the virtues of BMW's Night Vision system.
BMW can now add the Golden Steering Wheel to a rapidly filling trophy cabinet with BMW's 118d having earlier this year been awarded the title of World Green Car of the Year 2008. BMW's four-cylinder diesel engine combined with its EfficientDynamics program, managed to achieve an average fuel consumption of 4.5 l/100 kilometres in the EU test cycle and CO2 emissions of 119 grams per kilometre.
There's a lot to like about BMW's 1 Series and the bulging trophy cabinet is testament to just how good the range is. It just goes to show that when a manufacturer returns to the formula that made them famous (small car, RWD, big engine in the performance variants) that accolades will naturally follow.
