Remember the R8 prototypes running the RS6?s twin-turbo V10 and their eagerness to burst into flames and reduce the R8 to a burning pile of twisted supercar? Audi were testing the turbo-charged V10 R8 last year and while the car was supercar quick it had some serious engine cooling issues - or so the story goes.
Squeezing a V10 and its super hot twin turbo?s into an R8, left little room for cooling air to circulate and the result was a catastrophic fireball on more than one occasion.
Reports across the internet suggest that Audi have managed to shoe-horn the turbo V10 into the R8 and keep it cool enough, with the addition of a roof-mounted vent, similar to the one seen on the R8 V12 TDI concept.
The news stems from an interview between Autocar magazine and Wolfgang Hatz, the head of powertrain development for the Volkswagen Group. According to Hatz, the twin-turbo V10 has already been signed off for use in the new hyper R8.
It is even being suggested that this ultimate R8, will be badged the RS8, leaving a future RS version of the A8 sedan potentially nameless.
