Currently sitting on pole position for this weekends Le Mans 24hr race is one of Peugeot’s diesel powered prototypes while the other one has third place on the grid in front of the two diesel Audi’s in fourth and fifth places. Not a bad effort and we will be expecting to see the diesels at the pointy end of the field when the chequered flag is dropped later this weekend.

But that is just the start of it. We have also come across some interesting news concerning Audi’s new R8. They are planning to drop a diesel V8 in it and in doing so become the worlds first manufacturer of a diesel supercar.

Audi do have a 6.0-litre V12 TDI diesel that is good for 372Kw and 1000Nm but it is thought that this engine will be two big and heavy for the diminutive R8. Instead, Audi have a new 4.2-litre diesel that uses a cast-iron and vermicular graphite block and pumps out a respectable 243Kw/677Nm.

Looks to us like diesels are staging a bit of a revolution. Now where on the Le Mans grid did that petrol-electric hybrid place…?
