Nearly a year on since its coming was announced, Audi's Q5 Hybrid has made its first first appearance in a new video and images that preview its petrol-electric drivetrain and unique interior features.

Set for an unveiling at this month's LA Auto Show ahead of a 2011 US-market launch, the Q5 Hybrid is powered by the Volkswagen Group's 155kW turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, mated to a 32kW electric motor. Combined, the pairing produces 480Nm of torque.

The arrangement will be familiar to green enthusiasts, featuring in the Audi A8 Hybrid concept that debuted in Geneva earlier this year.

Audi promises a 0-100km/h run of 7.1 seconds for the Q5 Hybrid, and fuel consumption is listed at "under" 7.0 l/100km - making the Q5 Hybrid only slightly thirstier than the A8 Hybrid concept, at 6.2 l/100km.

Without its hybrid setup, the existing Q5 2.0 TFSI lists fuel consumption figures of 8.4 l/100km, and while the 2.0 TDI uses just 6.5 l/100km, its 11.4 second 0-100km/h run is no match for the Q5 Hybrid.

A highly-modified eight-speed tiptronic transmission sends power to all four wheels, without the aid of a torque converter. Its place is taken by the disk-shaped electric motor, combined with the multi-plate clutch operating in an oil bath, coupling and decoupling the electric motor and the TFSI engine.

Audi A8 Four-Cylinder Hybrid And Six-Cylinder Diesel In Development

Following the international launch of the four-cylinder Mercedes-Benz S 250 CDI in September, Audi has confirmed that it will launch a production version of its A8 Hybrid concept in 2012.

It's unclear what powertrain will drive the A8 Hybrid, although as featured in both the concept and the upcoming Q5 Hybrid, the same 2.0 litre TFSI petrol engine and electric motor pairing is likely.

In concept form, the A8 Hybrid allows fully-electric operation for over two kilometres at speeds up to 65km/h. Regenerative braking enables the battery to be topped up while on the move. When coasting or at rest, the petrol engine shuts down to conserve fuel.

A front-wheel-drive version of the A8 is expected to beat the Hybrid to market however, powered by a six-cylinder diesel engine, giving A8 buyers a more fuel-efficient option before the Hybrid becomes available.
