German automaker Audi has announced that sales for October reached 82,400 vehicles, a 7.2 percent increase over last year. Audi also sold 16.5 percent more cars in Australia in October, while total sales for 2008 thus far have now reached 844,700 cars - a 3.3 percent rise over the same period in 2007.

Much of Audi's strong commercial success has been attributed to the marque extending its reach in both Europe and in emerging Asian markets such as China, while sales in the besieged US market even managed to improve by 0.3 percentage points. Audi's Peter Schwarzenbauer says that the company's solid showroom performance puts it in a strong position to achieve landmark sales for 2008.

“Despite the currently difficult overall economic environment, we will reach our sales target of one million vehicles for 2008,” said Mr. Schwarzenbauer.

This month's release of the Q5 softroader is also expected to improve Audi sales, and the company plans to use the Christmas break to re-jig production volumes to make 2009 an even more successful year than 2008.
