THE DETROIT AUTO show is only a day in, and already eyes are turning toward Geneva. Speaking at Detroit this week, Audi Board Chairman Rupert Stadler confirmed Audi will show a hybrid version of the recently revealed 2011 Audi A8 at the March show.

Echoing the Chairman's words, Audi of America President John de Nysschen said that Audi will steer clear of 'mild' hybrids, confirming that the A8 hybrid will use a Prius-like parallel system that will allow it to run on electric power alone.

Following news last month that Audi will launch a hybrid version of the Q5 next year, this week's confirmation of an A8 hybrid is another step towards Audi's ultimate goal of a model range featuring all-electric variants.

Pointing to the possibility for confusion and disenchantment among buyers, Mr de Nysschen said that Audi "must say no" to technologies that don't significantly improve the efficiency of its cars.

Audi plans to launch eight new models this year, including the brand new A1, e-tron electric sports car and A7 four-door coupe. The German luxury carmaker is aiming for one million sales worldwide - up from nearly 950,000 in 2009.
