Following the unveiling of both petrol and diesel models, the 2012 Audi A6 Hybrid has been revealed at the Detroit Motor Show this week.

Powered by a petrol-electric arrangement that sees a 155kW 2.0 TFSI petrol engine paired with a 33kW/211Nm electric motor, the A6 Hybrid can reach 100km/h on electric power alone.

Mounted directly behind the TFSI and ahead of the modified eight-speed tiptronic transmission, the electric motor occupies the space normally devoted to the torque converter.

With both the petrol engine and the electric motor in play, the A6 Hybrid covers the 0-100km/h sprint in 7.3 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 238km/h. Fuel consumption is listed at 6.2 l/100km, and CO2 emissions are listed as 142g/km.

Travelling at a constant  speed of 60km/h, the hybrid powertrain can also drive the A6 for three kilometres in electric mode. As with most hybrids, the A6 Hybrid can also operate with the petrol engine only.

In hybrid mode, the system will recover power and activate the engine and the electric motor together, if swift acceleration is detected.

The unveiling of the A6 Hybrid follows last year's Q5 Hybrid, powered by the same 155kW petrol engine and 33kW electric motor driving the A6 Hybrid.

Audi promises a 0-100km/h run of 7.1 seconds for the Q5 Hybrid with fuel consumption listed at "under" 7.0 l/100km - making the Q5 Hybrid only slightly thirstier than the A8 Hybrid concept, at 6.2 l/100km.
