AUDI A1 QUATTRO
Until now, Audi has been more than tight-lipped about its plans for a quattro all-wheel-drive version of its new A1 light car.
Reports in recent months have suggested that the delay on delivering a top-shelf S1 variant was due to the absence of Audi's quattro system - a hallmark of the brand's S range.
As these official new photos show however, it appears Audi gone ahead with plans to develop an all-wheel-drive version of the PQ25 platform that underpins the A1 and the Volkswagen Polo.
Audi has declared that the photographed A1 is little more than a one-off prototype, developed as part of its 'Fascination of quattro' celebrations.
The German carmaker has confirmed that the quattro system featured in this particular A1 is almost identical to the versions offered with the A3 and TT, using an electronically-controlled and hydraulically-actuated multi-plate clutch in front of the rear axle.
Audi continues then with its 'no comment' position on the prospect of a quattro A1 - or S1 - but as the pieces begin falling into place, we could soon see a complete S range at Audi.
