Aston Martin's supercar finally has a name.

The hypercar being developed by the British sports car brand and the Red Bull Racing Formula One designer Adrian Newey will be called the Valkyrie.

Previously known as the AM-RB-001 the company has finally settled on a proper name for it. Valkyrie comes from ancient Norse mythology and is the name given to female figures who would choose which warriors would die in battle and escort them to the afterlife.

The decision to go with Valkyrie continues the brands preference for names starting in V for its top machines; following the Vulcan, Vantage and Vanquish.

"Aston Martin model names have deep meaning," explained, Marek Reichman, Aston Martin's chief creative officer. "They need to inspire and excite. To tell a story and enrich a narrative that stretches back some 104-years. The Aston Martin Valkyrie is an incredibly special car that demands an equally remarkable name; an uncompromising car that leaves nothing in reserve. The connotations of power and honour, of being chosen by the Gods are so evocative, and so pertinent to a car that only a fortunate few will ever experience."

The Valkyrie will be powered by a naturally-aspirated V12 engine designed by racing specialists Cosworth, supported by an electric motor to create a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio.

Aston Martin wants the Valkyrie to be the ultimate road car, competing against the likes of the Ferrari LaFerrari, Porsche 918 Spyder and McLaren P1 in a hypercar battle. The company's stated goal is for the track-only version of the Valkyrie to be as quick as a Le Mans prototype.

Only 150 examples of the road car will be built and just 25 of the track specials. Production of the Valkyrie is due to begin in 2019.
