MASERATI IS REPORTEDLY working on a new platform for its next generation of performance cars, a platform that could potentially be shared with future rear-wheel drive Alfa Romeos.

According to Inside Line, the new platform will have a high proportion of aluminium in its construction and will be used to underpin the next generation Quattroporte.

The replacement for the current GranTurismo coupe and convertible will use a short-wheelbase version of the chassis as well, and the lightweight platform will allow Maserati to extract even more performance from its vehicles.

It could also reap benefits for Alfa too, with Maserati’s corporate cousin supposedly in prime position to utilise the alloy platform in a range of RWD performance cars.

The replacement for the 8C Competizione would be an obvious recipient for the new chassis, however a RWD sedan could also be based on it.

Engineered to house a Ferrari-Sourced V8, the chassis is said to be capable of integrating upcoming hybrid technology from Ferrari. Alfa Romeo models that use the platform could also be powered by a V6 powerplant.

Details on the alloy platform are still vague, but with the Quattroporte due for replacement in two to three years more information is not likely to surface until 2012.
