Yesterday, Alfa Romeo handed down a couple of sketches of the MiTo GTA’s engine cover and an intake, which presumably will sit fore of the engine.

Now today, instead of dicking around with more sketches and obscure close-ups at odd angles, Alfa has gone the whole hog – well, almost – and shown us the entire face of the new Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA.

Where the face of the standard MiTo features a stylish, wide-open air dam along the bottom of the bumper, the MiTo GTA wears a much larger, more aggressive mesh-covered 'mouth'.  Also copping a boost in mean styling is the significantly larger grille, with more overstated slats framed by a pewter metallic surround.

A strong character line runs the length of the air dam, pushing the MiTo GTA’s face out further, like a dog pulling back its lips to reveal its best weapons.

Larger multi-spoke bronze-coloured alloy wheels, probably 17- or 18-inch, fill out the little MiTo GTA’s wheel arches, giving those huge flared guards a proper sense of purpose.

The Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA is expected to be powered by an all-new 1.8 litre four-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine, pushing some 171kW (230hp) through the front paws.

Alfa Romeo intends to reveal the MiTo GTA in the metal at the Geneva Motor Show next month, with a planned showroom launch toward the middle of the year.
