Alfa Romeo's stunning 8C supercar has inspired a smaller and more affordable addition to the Italian carmaker's stable: the 4C Concept, revealed at Geneva this week.

Two seats, rear-wheel-drive and a mid-mounted engine get the 4C heading in the right direction, and according to Alfa Romeo, it will be in production by 2012.

Looking like a more angular, pint-sized version of the 8C with a hint of Lotus Evora in the window line, the 4C measures "approximately four metres" long, riding on a wheelbase of "less than 2.4 metres."

The 4C is powered by the 150kW 1.75 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine driving the Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde - a considerable drop from the 331kW Ferrari-sourced 4.7 litre V8 driving the 8C Competizone.

Helping the 4C get the most out of its relatively small engine however is its ultra-lightweight construction, with extensive use of carbon fibre and aluminium elements featured throughout.

Weighing in at just 850kg, Alfa says the 4C will rocket to 100km/h in "less than five seconds," on its way to a top speed of 250km/h.
