ALFA ROMEO, like many of its European peers, is looking to smaller engines and forced induction to achieve greater fuel efficiency without sacrificing power.

Replacing the existing 2.2 litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine in the 159 and Brera will be a turbocharged 1.8 litre petrol engine, delivering 147kW, compared to the 138kW of the current engine.

On the diesel front, Alfa will introduce a new (and larger) 127kW 2.0 litre turbo diesel to replace the existing 112kW 1.9 litre diesel.

Along with delivering more power - which should see the 159 achieve 100km/h around a second faster - the new turbocharged petrol engine is expected to consume less fuel and emit fewer CO2 emissions, with fuel consumption estimated to drop from 11.3 l/100km to 10.1 l/100km.

The new engines meet Euro 5 emissions standards, and are expected to be more affordable, in Europe at least, than the current models.

Both engines will debut in Europe in the third quarter of 2009, with other markets to follow soon after.
