Icon Sam Newman is taking a stand for the common man (or so he might think), speaking out on Victorian speed limits this week.

Following a successful appeal for more time to contest a 2008 speeding fine, the former footy star described the State's speed limits as "ridiculous".

Talking on the Triple M radio station's Breakfast Show in Melbourne, Newman said: ???The rules and speed limits are so confusing and ridiculous."

???I know this will stir people up and they???ll say it???s not responsible, but why you would have to drive 100km/h down to Geelong on a four-lane highway is ridiculous."

Newman added that speed limits for passenger vehicles on the Hume Highway should be 120km/h, while trucks, which he said should be not allowed to travel in the right-hand lane, should be restricted to 100km/h.

In September 2008, Newman was detected travelling at 72km/h in a 60km/h zone at 12:18am.

While the details of Newman's offense might be unremarkable, Newman's battle against the fine, now lasting more than a year, has no doubt raised the ire of Victoria Police.

Newman said that he is fighting the $227 fine "on principle".
