Mercedes-Benz is set to expand its flagship AMG range.

Fans of fast four-doors will be spoilt by Mercedes-AMG when the new GT sedan goes on sale in 2018.

The German brand confirmed that a production-ready version of its four-door GT Concept will make its public debut next year, giving wealthy enthusiasts unprecedented performance options from the three-pointed star as the range continues to expand.

Mercedes is unlikely to use the same rear-mounted transmission and front-mid-engine layout as the GT coupe, but will instead use the same platform as the Mercedes-AMG E63.

Even so, Nadine Bottner, project manager for Mercedes-AMG, says the new GT model follows the discontinued SLS AMG and expanding AMG GT range as a genuine product developed independently by the performance brand.

"How are we going to go on with our GT family?" she says.

"There are eight brothers and sisters already, and there is a cousin ready to go.

"With the GT concept, we demonstrated at the Geneva motor show this year where the journey is leading us, to the next GT family member, the next independent development that comes directly from Affalterbach. It will be presented very soon, just in 2018."

Speaking with reporters during a drive of the hardcore Mercedes-AMG GT R coupe at the Bilster Berg circuit in Germany, Bottner promises that the four-door machine will be "just as nice to drive" as its coupe cousin.

"It will be a lot of fun," she says, "stay tuned".

The car is likely to be powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 offering up to 450kW and 900Nm - the outputs produced by the new Mercedes-AMG S-Class.

If the Geneva concept car is any indication, a hybrid version is likely to follow in coming years.
