Volvo Australia has confirmed a four-model lineup and a $79,900 starting price for its 5 Series-fighting S90 large sedan, which is due to launch in October this year as the second model built on the Swedish automaker’s box-fresh SPA architecture.

Volvo Australia will take a top-down approach to the S90’s local launch, with the up-spec S90 T6 Inscription and S90 D5 Inscription the first to arrive.

One month later the entry-level T5 Momentum and D4 Momentum will arrive to flesh out the rest of the S90 range, while the V90 wagon range will join the Volvo Australia family next year.

The S90 range tops out at $98,900 for the S90 T6 Inscription, making the S90 considerably more affordable than a BMW 5 Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class of similar specifications.

All models will be powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged inline four, with ‘T’ models being petrol and ‘D’ models diesel. The base T5 motor makes a respectable 187kW/350Nm, the D4 produces 140kW/400Nm and the D5 produces 173kW/480Nm.

The range-topping T6 does things a little differently to the other engines, employing both supercharging and turbocharging to make a stout 235kW of ppower and 400Nm of torque. On the D4 and D5 models, an electric motor spins up the turbocharger when accelerating from idle to reduce turbo lag, improving driveability.

T5 and D4 models are only available with a front-drive driveline, while the T6 and D5 take power to all four wheels

All models will be equipped with Volvo’s second-generation Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving aid, which employs cameras and radar technology to enable the car to mostly drive itself on a highway with little intervention required from the driver.
