Opel has revealed this week that it is working on a new convertible, and while it has not confirmed the new car's name, a next-generation Astra Convertible is likely.
The new Opel Astra is expected to launch in Australia sometime next year, when the German carmaker makes its local debut.
Opel's new convertible will be built on the same compact vehicle architecture that underpins the current fourth-generation Astra, which replaced the model last seen in Australia with a Holden badge.
“The new Convertible will be a great addition to our product line-up. It follows the long-standing tradition of highly emotional and legendary Opel Cabrios that provided important halo effects on our brand," Opel CEO Nick Reilly said.
"With its sleek and elegant design, our new Convertible will fully deliver on that same promise."
Little else has been revealed about the new model. It remains to be seen if it will continue the folding-hardtop arrangement of the Astra Convertible, or move to a lighter and more easily-stored fabric roof.
