Volvo has announced today that it will unveil a near production-ready version of its new V60 wagon, using a diesel-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain, at March's Geneva Motor Show.

The V60 plug-in hybrid will use a specially-tuned version of the line-up's existing 160kW/440Nm 2.4 litre five-cylinder diesel engine to drive the front wheels. At the back end, a 52kW electric motor will drive the rear wheels, drawing energy from a 12kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While the diesel engine lists fuel consumption figures of 5.4 l/100km in its regular tune, the version in the V60 plug-in hybrid - combined with the electric motor - leads to an  an astonishing 1.9 l/100km.

“In order to get true car enthusiasts to think green, you have to offer them the opportunity to drive with low carbon dioxide emissions without taking away the adrenaline rush that promotes genuine driving pleasure," Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volvo Cars said.

"The V60 Plug-in Hybrid has all the traditional properties of a genuine sports wagon. What we've done is to spice it up with spearhead technology."

With an all-electric drive mode offering a range of around 50km, Volvo says the V60 plug-in hybrid combines "the very best properties from three different car types in one sports wagon."

The V60 plug-in hybrid isn't Volvo's only foray into electric territory either: from 2011, the C30 DRIVe Electric Vehicle is expected to enter production, confirmed by CEO Stefan Jacoby late last year.

Australia

While the regular Volvo V60 diesel and petrol models are scheduled for an Australian market debut early this year, the V60 plug-in hybrid is not expected to make its international sales debut until 2012.

The V60's sedan counterpart, the Volvo S60, is on sale in Australia now.
