Launched in 2008, the current Jaguar XF has more than a little time left on the road. However, with the recent launch of the new XJ and reports of an all-new roadster of BMW 3 Series competitor in the works, the XF will soon be due for a refresh.

New spy photos obtained this week reveal that such an update is now in development, and while it's unclear what updates will be made on the mechanical front, one major update is obvious: the updated XF will get new XJ-inspired headlights to bring the medium-sized cat inline with the company's flagship.

The test car spied here follows earlier shots of the range-topping XFR, powered (in the current generation) by a 5.0 litre V8 producing 375kW and 515 Nm of torque.

As these spy photos show, the updated XF is sure to get a new face and an updated rear end, and interior tweaks are also likely.

The updated XF will likely introduce a number of safety upgrades also, with recent Euro NCAP tests seeing the XF achieve only a 4-Star crash safety rating. According to Euro NCAP, the current XF falls short in adult and child occupant protection, due to risk from structures in the dashboard.

In Australia, the XF has recently undergone a price shakeup, with both diesel and petrol versions of the stylish Jag now available for under $100,000. The XD 3.0D enters at $99,900 while the petrol XF 3.0 litre V6 starts at $93,900.
