Update: Australian powertrain options confirmed.

Previewed by our concept renderings back in April and set for its public debut at the Paris Auto Show in September, Volvo has at last revealed the wagon counterpart to its stylish S60 sedan, the 2011 Volvo V60.

On the styling front, Volvo says its aim was to create a wagon that showed clear coupe inspiration in its lines, while also retaining a decent load capacity. Volvo lists 430 litres of rear storage space.

“From the design viewpoint, the focus was on making the car as close to a coupé as possible, while retaining that handy extra space at the rear. Our sports wagon does not aim to compete with the traditional estate car. For the customer who wants a lot of load space, there is our V70 or XC70,” Örjan Sterner, head of exterior design for the new Volvo V60 said.

"Many of the customers who had an advance look at the new V60 during the development process feel that its attitude is at least as sporty as that of the all-new S60."

The V60 wagon will launch in Australia with the brand's powerful T6 3.0 litre inline-six cylinder petrol engine, producing 224kW and 440Nm of torque, pushing the V60 to 100km/h in 6.6 seconds.

The T6 petrol-engine lists fuel consumption figures of 10.2 l/100km on the EU combined cycle, an improvement of around 10 percent.

On the diesel front, 2.4 and 2.0 litre variants of Volvo's inline five-cylinder engine will be available, producing 151kW/420Nm and 121kW/400Nm respectively.

With the D5 2.4 litre twin-turbo diesel, the 0-100km/h sprint is covered in 7.9 seconds in both the manual and automatic model, while the 2.0 litre diesel covers the run in 9.4 seconds - again in both manual and automatic configurations.

Volvo has not released a full list of fuel consumption figures, although it has confirmed that the 2.4 litre diesel uses just 5.4 l/100km on the combined cycle.

The six-cylinder petrol engine is matched with all-wheel-drive as standard, and the only transmission available with the range-topping six is the Powershift six-speed automatic transmission (essentially the same unit offered with various Ford models).

While its sedan sibling is scheduled to arrive in Australia later this year, Volvo has confirmed that the V60 will go on sale locally in the first quarter of 2011. Final pricing and specifications will be announced closer to the launch date.
