2011 Volvo S60 And V60 Gain New 1.6 Litre GTDi Petrol Engines

Volvo is set to add a pair of new petrol engines to its upcoming S60 sedan and V60 wagon range, already powered by the company's 3.0 litre T6 and 2.0 litre GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) petrol engines and a pair of five-cylinder diesel engines.

The latest additions to the line-up are the T3 and T4 engines, both 1.6 litre GTDi petrol units.

Both engines offer the same 240Nm of torque, but while the 1.6 litre T3 GTDi engine produces 111kW, the higher-output T4 GTDi offers 135kW at 5500rpm. The T4 engine also benefits from an 'on-demand' overboost function that sees torque grow to 270Nm when needed.

“Small, high-performance GTDi engines are a part of our bid to get more energy out of smaller engines” Magnus Jonsson, Senior Vice-President of Product Development at Volvo said.

“We estimate reductions in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions in the region of 20 per cent compared with a conventional engine with larger displacement and similar performance.”

Both engines will be available with a six-speed manual transmission, while Volvo's Ford-sourced six-speed Powershift automatic transmission will be available as an option with the T4 engine.

The Volvo S60 will be launched in Australia at the end of 2010, while the V60 wagon will arrive early next year. Final specification and pricing is yet to be determined.
