Following its unveiling at April's Beijing Motor Show in China, where it is likely to find the bulk of its sales, Volkswagen has released a more extensive gallery for the 2011 Volkswagen Phaeton.
Despite a slight price advantage in Europe, the Phaeton has never enjoyed much market success compared to its more prestigious rivals in the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
With many criticising its plain styling, Volkswagen will be hoping the updated, more stylish 2011 Phaeton will achieve greater success.
Powertrain options for the updated Phaeton include six, eight and twelve-cylinder engines, with output ranging from 180kW to the 335kW offered by the W12 engine.
The Phaeton is equipped with Volkswagen's 4motion all-wheel-drive system as standard, along with air-suspension behind 18-inch alloy wheels.
Other features include bi-xenon headlights, four-zone air-conditioning, 18-way adjustable seats front and back, with a leather and alcantara-trimmed interior.
While the Phaeton might seem like an ideal (and potentially more affordable) alternative to the offerings of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and stablemate Audi, Volkswagen Australia's Karl Gehling told TMR today that the big VW is unlikely to see an Australian launch.
"The Phaeton doesn't fit in with our current pricing strategy, so we have no plans to bring it to Australia in the near future," Mr Gehling said.
Volkswagen Australia had previously considered the Phaeton for local showrooms, scotching the idea around 2006 when it determined that a business case could not be made. Seems that position is still the status quo.
