Car magazine originally revealed that Volkswagen intended to split the 2011 Beetle into two models. Now, however, it appears VW will take a different approach.

The initial reports indicated a smaller Beetle would join the line-up, based on the Volkswagen up!, while the larger version would be based on the Golf. It now appears that the Beetle will be an entirely separate model, loosely resembling the VW Ragster Concept pictured above.

This would mean saying goodbye to the cutesy curves of the previous model with the flatter roof squaring off the Beetle's looks noticeably. There is also the possibility of a hatchback setup with VW said to be looking for a more aggressive look to the new model.

Volkswagen may also be considering the possibility of running the Beetle as an entirely separate brand which would pave the way for all new versions, including a host of engine options.

The Volkwagen Beetle is well and truly due for a revamp. Hopefully VW can spruce it up a bit without losing the unique flair that the Beetle is renowned for (and loved universally by women, it has to be said).
