TRIUMPH HAS announced the 2011 Triumph Sprint GT, a new sports tourer based on the Sprint ST, with an Australian launch set for September.

The 1050cc utilised in the Sprint ST powers the GT, although a number of updates see output boosted by 3.5kW, making for a 'near-enough-is-good-enough' 97kW at 9200rpm. Torque is listed at 108Nm (up 5Nm), available 1200rpm earlier than before.

Designed for long trips, the GT sports a 20 litre fuel tank, which Triumph says will get you around 320km between refills. For a little extra open-road efficiency, the GT's sixth gear is seven-percent taller than the ST.

Despite its similarities, the GT is virtually an all-new bike from the fuel-tank back, with a longer single-sided swingarm leading to a 1537mm wheelbase - up from 1457mm for the more sports-oriented ST. The 43mm forks have also gained internal tweaks to accommodate the GT's dynamics.

The exhaust has been moved to the more traditional side-mounted position, creating a lower centre of gravity in the process.

The rear wheel is 1kg lighter to make up for the extra weight of the 31 litre panniers, and the braking package now features lighter discs and new brake pads designed to provide improved feedback and a 10 percent increase in braking performance.

Front braking is managed by a pair of 320mm floating discs with four-piston calipers, and a single 255mm disc at the rear.

Atop the handlebars, a three-dial instrument panel features an analogue speedometer and tachometer, and a digital display in the third dial housing offering figures for fuel consumption, distance to empty, journey time and average speed.

ABS braking, optional for the ST, is standard equipment for the Sprint GT. Heated grips, a taller aero screen, a gel comfort seat and magnetic tank bags are all available as options.

Triumph Australia has confirmed the Sprint GT will arrive in showrooms from September, with pricing to be revealed closer to the launch date.
