Following news in April that the 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI will be available in Australia later this year in both hatch and sedan form, Subaru Australia has today announced that buyers will also be able to choose an automatic transmission for the range-topping pair.

“We can now confirm that the revised sedan and hatchback Impreza WRX STIs will add the option of a five-speed automatic transmission.

“We’ve had increasing enquires about an auto over the last two years and we’re delighted to be able to deliver what a significant number of customers have requested.”

Sold in Japan as the WRX STI A-Line, the paddle-shifting automatic-equipped STI features a 'Downshifting Blipping Control' system, rev-matching on down-shifts.

As with automatic performance models of other carmakers, the WRX STI auto will allow the paddle-shifts to be used in a temporary operation without the selection lever being switched across to manual mode.

While Subaru Australia has not offered any power figures, the Australian-delivered model is likely to be largely identical to the Japanese-market A-Line - meaning engine output will remain unchanged at 221kW, although torque has been lowered from 407Nm to 350Nm to reduce stress on the automatic transmission.

Subaru Australia has been contacted to confirm these points. Watch this space.

Pricing and availability will be announced closer to the 2011 WRX STI's launch in the fourth quarter of this year.
