ORIGINALLY UNVEILED as a concept in 2008, the 2011 SsangYong C200 has been spied in cold-weather testing. Despite missing its planned Frankfurt unveiling last year, SsangYong is pushing ahead with its first new model since announcing restructuring plans last year.

Taking on the likes of the Toyota Rav4 and the Skoda Yeti, the look of the Italdesign Giugiaro-penned C200 concept is expected to carry over into the production phase virtually unchanged.

While little is known about the production C200's powertrain options, it is likely that the 2.0 litre and turbo-charged 1.8 litre petrol engines of the C200 Aero concept will feature.

SsangYong said at the Seoul Motor Show that the C200 is smaller and much lighter than its current models and offers vastly improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions – reduced by up to 50 percent in the case of the diesel-hybrid C200 Eco.

The pair of C200 CUVs displayed at Seoul were fitted with six-speed automatics, but a manual transmission is also planned for the production model.

No word has been given yet on which markets will see the C200, or whether both the Aero and Eco models will be offered.
