THIS TIME LAST year, Skoda unveiled the Fabia Sport Design Concept at Geneva, hinting at a new model in the brand's RS line. The predicted unveiling this week of the 2010 Skoda Fabia RS brings its own surprise, in the form of the Fabia Wagon RS.

Powered by the same 132kW 1.4 litre turbo- and super-charged TSI engine as the 2010 Volkswagen Polo GTI, both the Fabia RS and Fabia Wagon RS will push to 100km/h in 7.3 seconds. By comparison, the Polo GTI covers the distance in a very close 6.9 seconds.

Giving nothing away to its hatch sibling, the Fabia RS wagon reaches a top speed of 226km/h, while the Fabia RS stops just short at 224km/h. Fuel consumption is listed as 6.4 l/100km on the combined cycle.

The 1.4 litre twin-charged engine is paired with the Volkswagen Group's seven-speed DSG transmission, with steering-mounted paddles available on the optional multi-functional wheel.

Volkswagen's new XDS electronic limited slip differential system is standard, braking the inside front wheel to increase torque to the outside front wheel.

Visually, the Fabia RS is set apart from the regular model by its unique front and rear bumpers, 17-inch alloy Gigaro wheels, red-painted brake calipers, tinted windows and twin exhaust tips.

While an Australian launch for the Fabia RS and Fabia Wagon RS is not yet assured, Skoda Australia says both models are under serious consideration.
