RANGE ROVER EVOQUE

Two years after the unveiling of the almost-identical LRX concept, Land Rover revealed its new compact SUV, the Range Rover Evoque, at a private showing in London back in July.

While only basic technical information was offered at the time, Land Rover has today revealed new images and powertrain details for its in the CUV (or Compact SUV) segment.

Interior

The Evoque will be offered in three grades: the basic Pure, the luxury-oriented Prestige and the sports-themed Dynamic.

Depending on the trim grade, the Evoque's interior will feature a cloth upholstery made from 100 percent recycled polyester or, for higher grades, a full leather trim.

Similarly, the interior's aluminium highlights are also recycled, and even the plastic components in the cabin are made from 35 percent recycled plastic.

Equipment and features in the cabin will include Bluetooth audio streaming, USB connectivity, hard-drive based navigation system, and a panoramic sunroof.

Audio is provided by a Meridian system, with an 11-speaker setup as standard and 17 speakers available as an optional extra. A dual-screen rear entertainment system also figures among the interior options.

Air-conditioning is a dual-zone arrangement, but with the unique ability to program pre-heating or pre-heating settings a fortnight in advance, ensuring the Evoque is at the right temperature before you get in for the daily commute each morning.

Mechanical

Power for the Evoque is provided by a version of Ford's 2.0 litre turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engine, dubbed Si4 in Land Rover guise and paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Weighing 40kg less than Land Rover's inline six, the Si4 engine offers a comparable output, producing 180kW and 360Nm of torque in the Evoque. This same engine is expected to debut in the Australian Ford Falcon sometime in 2011 or 2012.

Diesel engines will also be offered, both 2.2 litre four-cylinder engines producing 110kW and 140kW respectively, paired with either the six-speed auto or a six-speed manual transmission - the latter combined with a fuel-saving stop/start system.

Land Rover claims significant fuel consumption improvements across all three engines, although specific numbers have yet to be revealed.

Both 4WD and front-wheel-drive versions of the Evoque have also been confirmed. A Haldex four-wheel-drive setup adds Land Rover's multi-terrain system, with driving mode that include general driving, grass/gravel/snow, mud and ruts, and sand.

The Evoque will also feature adaptive magnetic dampers, representing the first application of this system on any Land Rover model. A dynamic mode is available for models fitted with the adaptive dampers, designed to significantly reduce body roll for more aggressive cornering potential.

Pricing

The Evoque is set to go on sale in Europe in mid 2011, and Land Rover Australia has confirmed a third quarter 2011 local launch.

Pricing has yet to be revealed.
