PORSCHE IS GEARING UP to revive its classic Speedster badge with a Boxster-based variant. A pre-production prototype has recently been spotted getting about with its top down.

Boasting two aerodynamic humps behind each headrest and sporting a cut-down windscreen, the Speedster is expected to join the Boxster range as a special-edition runout model in 2010.

The Speedster prototype pictured here is fitted with Porsche's motorsports-spec ceramic composite brake system, however engine and driveline details are still a mystery.

A VW-sourced turbo-charged inline four is rumoured to be destined for the next-gen Boxster's engine bay; those rumours aside, it is perhaps likely that the Speedster will utilise Porsche's 3.4 litre flat six.

Power output of course can only be guessed, but odds are high the Speedster's engine will feature a slightly higher power rating than the Boxster S's 228kW.

Aside from the twin-humped rear deck, lower roofline and more streamlined fabric hood, we can expect to see the Speedster surface wearing a set of unique bumpers, new alloy wheels and a fixed rear spoiler.
