A little more than a year on from its last update, Mercedes-Benz has this week revealed the 2011 S63 AMG, now powered by the German giant's new 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8 engine.
While Mercedes continues development of the all-new S-Class, expected to launch late next year as a 2012 model, this last update to the current-generation S63 AMG is nonetheless a significant one, thanks to that new engine.
Replacing the 390kW/630Nm 6.2 litre V8 currently doing service in the AMG line-up, the new smaller-capacity twin-turbo-charged V8 produces 400kW and 800Nm of torque. The 5.5 litre V8 engine's maximum power is available at 4400rpm, with the huge torque figure coming online between 2000rpm and 4500rpm.
Aided by the addition of direct injection and a stop/start system, fuel consumption is listed at 10.5 l/100km, making for a 25 percent improvement over its predecessor. Carbon emissions are also down, listed at 244g/km.
An even more powerful version of the engine will be offered, with power jumping to 420kW and 900Nm of torque thanks to the AMG Performance Package.
In both cases, the S63 AMG is fitted with the brand's SpeedShift MCT seven-speed automatic transmission, the combination launching the 'regular' model to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds, with an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h.
Throw in the AMG Performance package, and the 100km/h point is reached in a slightly sharper 4.4 seconds, while top speed is increased to 300km/h.
Cosmetic changes to the 2011 S63 AMG are subtle to say the least, with the now-ubiquitous LED daytime running lights in the outside intakes of the front bumper, along with new 19-inch alloy wheels and V8 Biturbo badging. Braking is managed by double floating front calipers up front, and standard sliding calipers at the rear.
Inside, the S63 AMG gets a modest makeover with an updated instrument cluster and new stitching colours have been added to the 'Passion' leather upholstery.
Australian launch dates and pricing for the new S63 AMG have yet to be revealed, however Mercedes-Benz Australia Manager for Corporate Communications, Jerry Stamoulis has confirmed to TMR today that the new model will absolutely make its way to Australia.
