Mercedes-Benz Australia's S-Class line-up has come in for a refresh this week, with new and updated engines across the range.

The range-topping S 63 and S 65 AMG, revealed last year, have also arrived in Australian showrooms this month. Click here to learn more about the two AMG-enhanced S-Class flagships.

S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY

The new V6 petrol engine driving the S 350 BlueEFFICIENCY produces 225kW - up from the 200kW of its predecessor - while torque is up from 350Nm to 370Nm.

Despite the increased power, the petrol engine's fuel consumption has fallen from 9.8 l/100km to 9.0 l/100km, making for a 8.2 percent improvement. CO2 emissions are also down, from 234g/km to 210g/km. 0-100km/h: 6.9 seconds.

S 350 BlueTEC

The most efficient offering in the local S-Class line-up for 2011 is the S 350 BlueTEC, its 3.0 litre diesel engine using just 7.0 l/100km - an 11 percent reduction.

Power for the six-cylinder diesel is listed at 190kW and 580Nm of torque. 0-100km/h: 7.1 seconds.

S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY

The S 500 gains a new 4.6 litre V8 engine, revealed early last year, producing 320kW - up from the 285kW of the engine it replaces - and an impressive 700Nm of torque.

Like the new V6, fuel consumption for the new V8 has dropped, now listed at 10.5 l/100km - a 3.7 percent improvement for the short wheelbase model and 1.8 percent for the long wheelbase. 0-100km/h: 5.0 seconds.

S 600

The S 600's powerplant remains unchanged, drawing power from the 12-cylinder biturbo engine that produces 380kW and meets Euro 5 emissions standards.

Safety

Mercedes-Benz is also introducing two new safety systems for the S-Class, the first being the Active Lane Keeping Assist system which alerts drivers when they drift across their lane by sending subtle vibrations through the steering.

Active Lane Keeping Assist will also activate when the vehicle unintentionally passes over a continuous line to the right or left of the lane. When drift is detected, it gently brakes the rear wheel on the opposite side of the vehicle to counteract the drift away from the lane.

Active Blind Spot Assist is also standard, warning the drive with a red signal in the exterior mirror glass when it detects that changing lane may lead to an accident.

Audio

A new Bang & Olufsen ReoSound AMG sound system is now available for the S-Class (although standard with the S 65 AMG), with 15 speakers, two amplifiers and a total output of 1200W.
