A pair of diesel-powered versions of the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is on its way to next month's Geneva Motor Show, Chrysler has confirmed this week.

An all-new powerplant, the Grand Cherokee CRD's diesel engine will be a 3.0 litre V6 turbo-diesel, developed and built by Fiat Powertrain and VM Motori.

The engine was also recently confirmed as an option with Fiat's re-badged version of the Chrysler 300, to be sold in Europe as the Lancia Thema.

Drawing on Fiat's MultiJet II injection technology, the diesel engine produces 180kW and 550Nm of torque between 1800 and 2800rpm. Fuel economy is listed at 8.3 l/100km, marking a 17 percent improvement over the engine it replaces.

A de-tuned version of the engine will also be offered, with power 141kW and 440Nm of torque. Jeep says this engine will be offered with the Laredo variants, while the more powerful engine will go to the Limited grade.

The new Grand Cherokee is currently offered in the US and Australia with only the company's brand-new 210kW 3.6 litre V6 and the updated 259kW 5.7 litre V8 petrol engine.

Australia

Speaking with TMR today, Chrysler Australia's Dean Bonthorne confirmed that a 3.0 litre V6 version of the Grand Cherokee will go on sale in Australia "around mid year," although specific details will be revealed closer to its arrival.
