As promised back in October, Hyundai has today announced availability of the petrol-engined 2011 ix35 Highlander AWD 2.4.

Joining the existing 2.0 litre R-Diesel model, the petrol Highlander is powered by Hyundai's 2.4 litre engine producing 130kW and 227Nm of torque.

Fuel consumption for the larger engine is listed at 9.2 l/100km, compared to 8.5 l/100km for the 2.0 litre engine. Carbon emissions are listed at 219g/km.

The Highlander 2.4 is the second model in the line-up to adopt the 2.4 litre engine, previously unique to the ix35 Elite AWD.

“To date we have struggled to keep up with customer demand for the ix35, with the top of the range Highlander version accounting for almost half of all sales enquiries," Hyundai's Oliver Mann said.

“The implementation of additional production capacity for European markets means we can increase ix35 supply - and customers are demanding more ix35 Highlanders.”

As with the majority of the models in the ix35 line-up, the Highlander AWD 2.4 is available with a six-speed automatic transmission only, offering an electronic sequential manual mode.

Safety across the ix35 range includes Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Anti-skid Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Downhill Brake Control (DBC) and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC).

DBC assists drivers to maintain control and speed on steep descents, while HAC minimises backward rolling when starting off on steep inclines.

The Highlander models (2.4 petrol, 2.0 diesel) are fitted with dusk-sensing headlights, rear-parking sensors, and a rear-view camera with the screen integrated into an electro-chromic rear-view mirror.

Setting the Highlander variants apart as the top-shelf models are a rear camera, panorama glass roof and full iPod integration

The Highlander models are also equipped with dual-zone climate control with cluster ioniser, along with six-way electric driver seat with lumbar support, push-button start function and proximity smart key.
