SPY PHOTOS OF what appears to be the next-generation 2011 Hyundai Elantra have surfaced today, revealing that the style shake-up across the Hyundai range is continuing full-steam-ahead.

While both ends of the spied test car are heavily camouflaged, the rakish profile reveals styling drawn from the larger Sonata/i40. Even up front, the thick cladding can't hide the Sonata-inspired long headlights and sloping bonnet.

Efforts to block an early glimpse at the new Elantra's finer points continue up back. It is clear however that the tail-lights extend from near the number plate wrapping the rear quarter panel.

Hyundai has yet to reveal any details for its next-gen small sedan. Engine options however are expected to include the Theta II direct-injection engine scheduled for the upcoming Sonata replacement.

Hyundai's LPI Hybrid system could also see a local launch with the new Elantra.

It's unclear at this point whether the Elantra will keep its name when it arrives in Australia, or whether it will adopt the numeric nomenclature making its way through the Hyundai line-up.

With i10, i20, i30 already taken - and the i40 name rumoured to replace Sonata - the numeric possibilities are limited. It remains to be seen how Hyundai will deal with the Elantra.
