FORD AUSTRALIA recently axed plans for a locally-built version of the Focus, but development of the next generation European-designed Focus is well under way as these new photos of a test mule indicate.

While few conclusions can be drawn from the photos, there is growing speculation that the Ford Iosis MAX concept, revealed at Geneva earlier this year, represents the direction of the new Focus.

Styled as an evolution of Ford's 'Kinetic' design language, the Iosis (above) bears a strong resemblance to the new Ford Fiesta.

There are no drivetrain details on offer for the next generation Focus, but the Iosis concept which featured a 132kW 1.6 litre EcoBoost engine perhaps gives an indication of one possible engine option.

An electric version of the Focus with a 160km range has also featured among the rumours.

With efficiency of that order, if accurate, an electric Focus would be a direct competitor for the likes of the Nissan LEAF revealed earlier this month.
