The planets look set to align for BMW and Audi's '6' cars, with the next-generation 6 Series Convertible and Audi A6 set for an unveiling in the coming months.

Both cars have been spied testing in recent weeks, and while the heavy camouflage of the test cars reveals little, the new (and now well-established) design languages of both brands offer more than a few hints at what we can expect at launch.

While Audi has yet to offer a specific launch date for the new A6, a recent group photo of the brand's flagship cars featured a sheet-covered sedan that can only be the next-generation executive sedan.

Accompanying the image was a statement that confirmed a late 2010 production schedule for the A6 at its Neckarsulm plant, where the German carmaker also builds the R8 Spyder, A8, A8L and A7 Sportback.

BMW has offered a more specific outline for the next-generation 6 Series, inviting previous customers in the UK to witness the new model's launch in March next year.

"The new BMW 6 Series Convertible will be launched on 26 March 2011. So to make sure we keep you up to date with the latest news and send you an invitation to an exclusive BMW Dealer pre-launch preview, just register below," the invitation reads.

Like the A6, BMW has yet to reveal official images and details for the new 6 Series, although it was confirmed in the lead-up to the Paris Auto Show that the BMW Gran Coupe Concept offers a preview of what to expect for the look of the new 6.

Among its powertrain options, the next generation 6 Series is expected to be offered with BMW's new N55 single-turbo inline-six petrol engine. The M6 is likely to draw power from the same 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 powering the X5 M and X6 M, developing more than 415kW and 650Nm of torque.
