NEW SPECULATION for the next generation of Audi's barnstorming RS4 suggests that the carmaker will switch from V8 power to a supercharger-assisted six-cylinder.

Where the previous generation RS4 draws power from a 4.2 litre V8 developing around 310kW, the new RS4 is expected to use a highly-tuned version of the 3.0 litre supercharged TFSI V6 found in the current S4.

Power figures for the new RS4 are (of course) unavailable, but with the S4's supercharged V6 producing 245kW, its output in RS4 guise should near the figures of the V8.

Audi's push to drop a pair of cylinders is understood to be part of a move to meet the stricter fuel and emissions standards coming into place in Europe and other international markets.

Audi has offered no word on a launch date for the new RS4, but a late 2010 launch as a 2011 model is likely. The German luxury carmaker is also expected to launch its RS5 coupe late next year for the 2011 model range.
