VOLVO IS SET to begin the first production use of its collision avoidance system with the launch of the new S60 sedan next year.

Officially known as Collision Warning With Full Auto Brake And Pedestrian Detection, the system tracks and anticipates the path of pedestrians and other vehicles, reacting accordingly.

According to Volvo, the system can, on its own, completely avoid any collision below 25km/h.

At higher speeds, the system will both alert the driver and slow the vehicle, lessening the risk and assisting the driver's reaction time.

Compared to infrared detection systems offered by Mercedes-Benz and BMW, Volvo's system is unique in that it is so far the only one that actively intervenes.

Volvo says its ultimate goal is to build a car that cannot crash.

The all-new S60 sedan was originally slated to go on sale in Europe later this year after debuting at this month?s Frankfurt Motor Show. A Los Angeles, Detroit or Geneva unveiling now appear more likely.

Drawing much of its inspiration from last year?s S60 Concept, the new car?s platform and bodywork is understood to have been signed off, but much work reportedly remains to be done on the S60?s mechanical package.
