VOLKSWAGEN HAS RELEASED a series of new images and details for its upcoming Scirocco R coupe, a car Volkswagen Australia is considering for a local launch.

Motivated by a turbocharged 2.0 litre in-line four-cylinder, the Scirocco R produces 195kW and 350Nm, sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission (VW's DSG transmission is an option) and Volkswagen's XDS electronic LSD.

Braking is managed by 345mm discs up front and 310mm discs at the rear. Other features include Anti-Slip Regulation and Dynamic Chassis Control for variable damping.

Body-wise, the Scirocco R features significant updates over the regular Scirocco.

Larger air intakes feature in the front bumper, while an enlarged rear wing sits above the rear window.

A blacked-out diffuser panel is fitted in the rear bumper, flanked by a pair of chrome exhaust tips.

Inside, microfibre-trimmed sport seats feature, along with a flat-bottomed leather-rimmed steering wheel.

Piano-black accents and aluminium trim appears throughout the Scirocco R’s cabin, and DSG-equipped models also benefit from a set of wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Volkswagen Australia is considering the Scirocco R for a local launch, however pricing remains the number one stumbling block - the cost of the Scirocco puts it well above that of the Golf range, potentially making it an expensive burden for Volkswagen Australia.

Despite this, enthusiasm for the Scirocco remains high within Volkswagen Australia. The company is continuing to assess the model for the local market, but has as yet no confirmed plans to import it here.
