VOLKSWAGEN HAS LAUNCHED the newest addition to its small car family, the Polo three-door hatch, at this week's Frankfurt Motor Show.

The 2010 Polo three-door shares its external dimensions with the five-door hatch already available in Europe, but uses its longer doors and uncluttered glasshouse to appear lower and longer than its five-door sibling.

Like the five-door, the three-door hatch boasts Volkswagen's new Scirocco-inspired corporate 'face' in its front-end styling.

In Europe, six petrol and diesel engines will be available for the three-door, with power outputs ranging from 44kW to 77kW.

Two 1.2 litre three-cylinder petrol engines will be offered in 44kW and 51kW trim. A 63kW 1.4 litre four-cylinder will be the most powerful petrol motor offered initially until a 77kW direct-injected 1.2 litre turbo four-cylinder arrives.

The diesel range starts with a 55kW direct-injected turbodiesel, with 66kW and 77kW variants of the same engine rounding out the rest of the diesel engine range.

A five-speed manual gearbox will be the standard transmission for all models from launch, although buyers of the 63kW petrol and 66kW diesel Polos can opt for a seven-speed DSG auto.

The 77kW turbocharged petrol engine will get a DSG option when it launches next year.

Three trim levels - Trendline, Comfortline and Highline - will be offered with the new Polo, and all models will ship with front and side airbags as well as electronic stability control, ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist.

Volkswagen also plans to launch a super-frugal BlueMotion variant of both the three and five-door Polo, and expects the high-efficiency models to consume a Prius-beating 3.3 litres of fuel per 100km.

The production-ready BlueMotion Polo will make its debut at the Frankfurt, where more details will be revealed.

Volkswagen Australia said today that pricing and specifications for the Australian market are still being finalised. An announcement is likely in coming weeks.
