THE PERFORMANCE-ORIENTED Volkswagen Golf GTD, when TMR last reported on it, was "under consideration" by Volkswagen Group Australia for a local release.

It appears now that the diesel-powered hot hatch may soon be headed for Australian showrooms.

Data obtained from the Australian Government's  Road Vehicle Certification System (RVCS) shows that Volkswagen has applied for, and received, ADR certification for the Golf GTD three-door hatch.

With certification complete, an official announcement from Volkswagen regarding the Golf GTD is likely to be made soon.

According to the RVCS documentation, the Australian-market Golf GTD will generate 125kW from its 2.0-litre inline four turbodiesel engine.

A six-speed manual gearbox will be standard, with VW's quick-shifting six-speed DSG twin-clutch transmission an option.

The RVCS information also shows that VW Australia has certified the Golf 77TDI Trendline three-door hatch, which will be powered by a 77kW 1.6-litre turbodiesel and likely slot in below the existing 90TSI Trendline.

Pricing and a solid release date for both the Golf GTD and the Golf 77TDI are still unknown, but Volkswagen Australia will most likely announce both models within the next few months.
